Inside the Subway - the Pools

The floor of this canyon is fairly level left to right but slopes down steeply in the direction of the water flow. However, it is pock-marked with a series of 6 or 8 of these remarkable round-ish pools. They have abruptly vertical sides and flat bottoms. There must be some anomalies in the composition of the sandstone that causes it to fracture only in certain spots. It makes for a unique series of miniature waterfalls.

    The Subway Crack

This crack runs several hundred feet down the floor of the canyon just downstream from The Subway. It's a crack about 8 inches wide and a foot or so deep that runs in a straight line. The water runs across the slick sandstone less than an inch deep but concentrates into this crack creating what's nearly a mini-waterfall. I was lucky to be there when the autumn leaves were falling and sprinkling themselves across the surface.

    Cotonwoods and Boulders

An unusual amalgamation of reddish sandstone canyon walls, bluish boulders and yellowing cottonwood trees along the Left Fork of North Creek. This is in the opening mile of the hike to the Subway.
